TIPS FOR USING HERITAGE VIILLAGE COLORS PAINTS
- MOST IMPORTANT: Because of the heavier consistency of Heritage Village paints, they will not "settle" as most commercial paints do and may look like they are ready to brush on when opening. Although they take a lot longer to "settle", they will separate and must be stirred well.
- Heritage Village paints can and should be used just like any ordinary paint as far as preparation goes. It is vital that surface be properly prepared and clean.
- On previously painted surfaces, if existing paint is still well bonded, sand lightly (more thoroughly on gloss surfaces) and apply coat of paint. Acrylic latex may be used over oil or vice versa, but a surface previously painted with oil paint must be well sanded before a new application of acrylic latex.
IMPORTANT: If existing paint coat is lifting or peeling in any way, strip or sand well to make sure that the surface is solid and ready to paint.
- On virgin wood, it is best to use a commercial primer such as BIN or KILZ to seal in the natural saps and oils in the wood, as well as knot holes. To get better topcoat coverage, you may add a little of the Heritage Village paint to the primer to color slightly, thus allowing better coverage.
- Heritage Village oil and acrylic latex are both well suited for exterior painting. For exteriors heavily exposed to the sun, acrylic latex will perform better. Oil paints tend to "chalk" from ultra violet rays more than acrylic latex. The nature of acrylic resins is also slightly elastic and will expand and contract slightly with extreme temperatures. IMPORTANT: Thin oil paints with mineral spririts only. Thin acrylic latex with water only. Thin GRADUALLY but not to exceed ratio of one pint per gallon ... maximum.
- Heritage Village milk paint is very suitable for interior walls, trim, furniture, etc. It is washable, but if put on an item that is to be handled and washed often, a coat of Heritage Village Clear Paste Varnish is recommended for protection. Milk paint is water-based. Thin and clean up with water only.
- Heritage Village paste stains may be used just like any stain. Our paste stain is an oil-based product and should also be thinned (if desired) with mineral spirits only; however, it should not require such thinning. Heritage Village stain is a unique gel stain; it is designed to be of heavier consistency to eliminate immediate, uncontrollable penetration like the ordinary solvent-based stains. Our stain may be applied with a brush (despite its gel consistency) or a cloth. THIS PRODUCT MUST BE THINNED TO SPRAY.
- USE A GOOD BRUSH! A bristle brush will perform well, as will any good brush. Avoid the use of "cheap" brushes.
