DIRECTIONS FOR CRACKLE FINISH

Old pieces of varnished or painted furniture, due to exposure to sunlight and temperature changes, exhibit fine hairline cracks in the finish. This crackle finish is easy to reproduce with Heritage Village Faux Crackle Finish.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
  • Select two complementary Heritage Village colors for your project, and follow manufacturer's directions for surface preparation. Water-base paints work best with crackle. Apply the first coat and let it dry thoroughly; this base coat will be the color that will show through the cracks. Next, brush on a thin, uniform coat of faux crackle finish. The crackle pattern will develop in whatever direction it is brushed, so apply in one direction only. The crackle may tend to creep or crawl on the surface; this is normal and will not affect the finished pattern. Do not attempt to reapply or redo brush strokes; avoid overworking. After approximately 30 - 60 minutes, the crackle should be dry enough to apply a topcoat, but not completely dry. Apply a thin, uniform coat of your selected Heritage Village Colors topcoat. The crackle pattern should begin to develop only minutes after topcoat application. At this point, do not attempt to brush back into the surface.

  • Allow entire piece to thoroughly dry. For surfaces that may be repeatedly handled or washed, a coat of Heritage Village Colors clear paste varnish is recommended. It is always best to try a test piece before working on your actual project
